Man Of Steel (2013) has been criticised for different reasons, one of which was making the film "too big" for an initial run at an updated boy in blue tights. Mass CGI, action, and general destroying of cities (that some may argue is realistic if these alien supermen existed) has even Snyder himself admitting that there had to be a huge discussion as to how you top that, whilst continuing the style that has inherently been set for the DC Universe on-screen. Many fans of both the Dark Knight series and the latest instalment of Superman, worry that action and spectacle could overshadow the intense relationship that the two characters have shared in the comic books for over sixty years.
Without arguing over whether or not Snyder should be directing instead of Nolan, which could literally take hours of discussion, the greater attention has fallen on the casting of a new Dark Knight. Now with great respect to the work that Christian Bale carried over an entire trilogy of films, we can't help but think what if? especially when it comes to actors being cast in roles that have been shared by many. Just as Henry Cavill had been a front runner for the nostalgic homage to the original Richard Donner/Lester movies in Superman Returns (2006), the newest group of names to be mentioned in regards to the next man under the cowl have fanboys questioning every aspect of the 2015 release.
Among them are the following:
Joe Manganiello - star of "True Blood" and another considered for the role of Superman apparently?
Richard Armitage - British actor who is playing the dwarf Thorin in Peter Jackson's Hobbit series, and had a short lived appearence as Hydra assassin Heinz Kruger in Captain America: The First Avenger
Matthew Goode - an old flame who played Ozymandias in Snyder's Watchmen.
Ryan Gosling - star of Drive, The Ides of March, and Gangster Squad, who has virtually been mentioned as a front runner for every major movie franchise character since birth
Josh Brolin - co-star of Gangster Squad with Gosling, and veteran Warner Bros/ DC Entertainment actor for his appearance as the scarred gunslinging bounty hunter Jonah Hex, soon to be veteran bad-ass for his role in the upcoming graphic novel adaptation Sin City: A Dame to Kill For
As a life long fan of the source material, and as opinionated as it sounds. The only actor among these names that could do serious justice to the role in my view is Brolin. Why? well with the style of announcement Snyder made with Man Of Steel star Harry Leninx reading the famous words from Frank Miller's 1986 Graphic Novel The Dark Knight Returns:
"I want you to remember, Clark…in all the years to come…in your most private moments…I want you to remember…my hand…at your throat…I want…you to remember…the one man who beat you."
It seems to me that an older presence, and more intense style that Brolin has often brought to his roles could serve as the perfect example of staying true to the source material, particularly as the suggestion is that we may witness an on screen Batman VS. Superman movie, closely matching what fans have adored in novel's like Miller's Dark Knight Returns. This in itself matches the darker edge Warner Bros are going for in the DC movie franchise these days, and why it seems Snyder suggested the line be read to announce the movie as it is a rough reflection of what they will be going for in the 2015 release. But everyone is entitled to their opinion and these are early days full of excitement, rumour and speculation.
For anyone out there who is a fan, and has not read Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, I highly recommend this as a good read, and also recommend the recent two part animated adaptation that Warner/DC released in 2012 and 2013. The films feature the voice talents of RoboCop star Peter Weller as Batman/Bruce Wayne, and Fringe actor Mark Valley as Superman/ Clark Kent in Part 2.
